Tyrone Prothro Shares His Journey from Bama to the Coaching Ranks

Prior to Nick Saban's arrival in 2007, Alabama football went through a rocky up-and-down quarter century of football following the retirement and passing of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

In that span, Alabama football went through two probations and four losing seasons from 1997-2006. However, one star receiver exemplified the promise of a brighter future during one of the program's darkest eras.

Prior to having his football career ending against Florida, the Helfin, Alabama native reeled in 58 catches for 863 yards with five touchdown grabs from 2003-2005.

He is most noted for his highlight grab in 2005 over the back of Southern Miss defensive back Jasper Faulk which helped to give the Crimson Tide a 30-21 comeback win over the Golden Eagles and later give the Crimson Tide wide receiver the 2006 ESPY for "Best Play".

Recently, Prothro accepted an assistant coaching spot at Jasper High School where he will be tutoring their wide receivers.

During Wednesday's edition of The Gary Harris Show, the former Alabama star receiver took listeners on his journey from Tuscaloosa to joining the high school coaching ranks in the Yellowhammer State.

Prothro relived his incredible catch against Southern Miss, his two-touchdown performance and his subsequent injury against Florida and how he initially became a fan of the Crimson Tide.

As the conversation turned from his days in the crimson and white to his future with a coaching whistle, the former Alabama receiver described his keys for getting his players to buy into what he teaches.

"It's all about knowing each individual kid. As a coach, you have to know each individual kid's story. If you're coaching these kids, you have to know their story and you have to kind of get on their level to kind of really understand where they're coming from." Prothro said.

Aside from his recent hiring at Jasper High School, he entered the coaching ranks last season on a full-time basis as the wide receivers coach at Spanish Fort High School.

At the end of his visit with Gary Harris, Prothro talks about his ultimate goal in coaching.

"Ultimately, before the end of my career, I do want to make it back up to the college ranks." Prothro said.
