The Alabama football team added to its trophy case Saturday night.

At halftime of the Alabama-Auburn men’s basketball game, the Crimson Tide was presented the Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, which goes annually to the winner of the Iron Bowl.

Alabama fell short in its bid for a fourth national championship since 2009 this past season but defeated Auburn 55-44 in the highest-scoring Iron Bowl ever last November at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The team also won its 24th SEC Championship in 2014.

“I’d really like to make sure that everybody understands how proud I am of this team,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said, “of the resiliency that we showed in winning the Iron Bowl and several other games this year, as well as being SEC champs.”

It’s the fifth time Alabama has won the award under Saban, which was founded in 1948. The Crimson Tide finished 12-2 for the year, picking up its seventh straight 10-win season in the process.

“We have a great team here at Alabama, a great administration who has really set the table to help us be successful,” Saban said. “Coach (athletic director Bill) Battle, our athletic department, has certainly supported our players in every way to help them be able to be successful in life.

“And you the fans have made it very special to be able to cheer on the Crimson Tide. Our players really appreciate your support, so thank you very much and Roll Tide!”

Prior to Alabama’s current run, Auburn had won six straight in the series before the streak was broken with a 36-0 win in 2008.

Last year, Auburn accepted the trophy after knocking off Alabama 34-28 on a last-second field goal returned for a touchdown. At the halftime ceremony, Tigers coach Gus Malzahn proclaimed that the trophy would remain in Auburn for “a while.”

Per tradition, the losing school’s SGA president must travel to the opposing school to present the trophy and sing its fight song at halftime of the men’s basketball game between the two schools. Auburn SGA president Logan Powell fulfilled both of those duties.

Alabama won the basketball game Saturday night, 57-55, on Rodney Cooper's putback in the final seconds.
