Softball Shuts Out West Alabama, 13-0, Friday in Tuscaloosa
Alabama softball was dominant in all phases of the game Friday night against West Alabama, shutting out the Tigers, 13-0, over 10.0 innings at Rhoads Stadium.
The Crimson Tide offense tallied 12 runs, including a pair of home runs from sophomore Bailey Hemphill and one from freshman Kayla Davis. Freshman Skylar Wallace went 4-for-5 with a pair of triples, a double and single. The defense was error-free and three pitchers threw a combined shutout with two hits allowed and 16 strikeouts. Senior Courtney Gettins threw 3.0 innings in the start with freshman Montana Fouts pitching 4.0 relief innings behind her, fanning nine batters with no hits allowed. Sophomore Madison Preston threw the final three innings, striking out four.
Senior Merris Schroder drove in the first runs of the day with a two-run double in the bottom of the first and Hemphill followed that with a first-pitch home run, doubling the lead to 4-0. Hemphill added another with an RBI single in the second and freshman Skylar Wallace drove in a pair in the bottom of the third with a double to the wall in left to make it 7-0.
Sophomore KB Sides drove in fellow sophomore Maddie Morgan with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-0. Wallace led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple, her third extra-base hit of the day, and Schroder followed with another triple to drive her in and make it 9-0. Davis sent the first pitch of her next at-bat over the fence, a two-run home run to make it 11-0, and an RBI double from sophomore Kyra Lockhart made it 12-0. Hemphill’s second home run of the day was a solo shot in the eighth inning to make it 13-0, which was the final run of the day for either team.
Alabama softball continues its fall season Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT against Wallace State.
