Alabama Women’s Basketball Drops to No. 24 Texas A&M, 91-52

The Alabama women’s basketball team dropped a 91-52 decision to No. 24 Texas A&M in its Southeastern Conference opener on Thursday night in Reed Arena. The loss puts the Crimson Tide at 10-4 overall and 0-1 in the league while the win brings the Aggies to 11-4 on the season and 1-0 in the SEC.

“Texas A&M is a tough team,” said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. “We had to do so much to keep the ball away from Kelsey Bone, which provided opportunity elsewhere for them. We got better as the game went on, but we did not shoot the ball well enough to make any kind of run. We gave good effort, but this is the SEC and we have to get ready to go out and do it again.”

Alabama was led in scoring by sophomore Daisha Simmons, who had 12 points while senior Meghan Perkins finished with a team-high five rebounds. Texas A&M was led by junior Kelsey Bone’s 20 point and 14 rebound performance.

Redshirt sophomore Kaneisha Horn knocked down a jumper on the first possession of the game to get Alabama on the board first with 23 seconds off the clock. The Tide and Aggies traded baskets over the next three minutes before 11 unanswered points from Texas A&M gave the Aggies a 20-10 advantage with 12:11 to go in the half. Texas A&M continued to distance itself from Alabama and would head into halftime with a 22-point lead, 46-24.

The Aggies opened the second half with a 15-6 run to extend its lead out to 31. Texas A&M would lead by as many as 39 down the stretch.

For the game, Texas A&M shot 53.8 percent (35-65) from the floor while Alabama completed 32.8 percent (21-64) of its attempts. The Aggies out-rebounded the Tide, 52-25, and had 24 assists compared to the Tide’s seven.
